HypnoBirthing® Childbirth Education

The Mongan Method

Affiliated with the HypnoBirthing® Institute

HypnoBirthing® - is as much a philosophy as it is a technique. The concept of HypnoBirthing® is not new, but rather a "rebirth" of the philosophy of birthing as it existed thousands of years ago and as it was recaptured in the work of Dr. Grantly Dick-Read, an English obstetrician, who first forwarded the concept of natural birthing in the 1920s. The method teaches you that in the absence of fear and tension, severe pain does not have to be an accompaniment of labor.

You will gain an understanding of how the birthing muscles work in perfect harmony--as they were designed to--when your body is sufficiently relaxed. You will learn how to achieve this kind of relaxation, free of the resistance that fear creates, and you will learn to use your natural birthing instincts for a calm, serene and comfortable birth. When you have your baby with HypnoBirthing®, you will not be in a trance or a sleep. What you will experience is similar to the daydreaming or focusing that occurs when you are engrossed in a book or a movie or staring into a fire. You will be conversant and in good spirits--totally relaxed, but fully in control. Awake throughout, you will be aware of your body's surges; but because you will have trained yourself to reach complete relaxation, you will be able to determine the degree to which you will feel the surges. You will experience birthing in an atmosphere of calm relaxation, free of the fear and tension that prevents the muscles of your body from functioning as nature intended them to. In this calm state your body's natural anesthesia, endorphins, replaces the stress hormones that constrict and cause pain.

The HypnoBirthing® method does not promise that your birth will be pain free, but nearly 70% of mother's using HypnoBirthing® do experience what they describe as a comfortable birth that is manageable. In class you will learn how to create a positive expectancy, release any fear about birth and parenting, trust in your body's ability to birth as it should, and build the self-confidence you need so you can and will achieve your ideal birth as you see it. Releasing fear and anxiety will enable you to look forward to your baby's birth and allow you to enjoy the magic of pregnancy. HypnoBirthing® is about focusing on the outcome you want; not what is not wanted. By focusing on the positive you are more likely to achieve your goals. However, through no fault of your own, sometimes birth does not go as planned. Should this happen, you will feel prepared to go with the flow and have the appropriate knowledge to make the best decisions given the circumstances.

WHAT IS HYPNOSIS?

Hypnosis is a naturally induced state of relaxed concentration -- a state in which we communicate suggestions to our subconscious mind. The part of our mind that influences what we think, how we feel, and the choices we make. It can actually control pain. There is no magic to achieving success with self-hypnosis. Almost anyone who chooses to can reach deep relaxation and redirected focus. When having your baby with HypnoBirthing®, what you will experience is similar to the daydreaming or focusing that occurs when you are engrossed in a book or staring at a fire. You will be conversant and in good spirits -- totally relaxed, but fully in control. You will be aware of your body's contractions, but will be able to determine the extent to which you feel the surge. You will experience your birthing in an atmosphere of calm and relaxation without fear and tension that cause pain. Your body's natural anesthesia (endorphins) will replace the stress hormones that create pain. When its time for your baby to be born, you will be fully awake and involved.
